Theodore O. Poehler, PhD

Vice Provost for Research
The Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, Maryland

Dr. Ted Poehler has served as Vice Provost for Research of the University for fifteen years, after first joining Johns Hopkins at the Applied Physics Laboratory where he established a productive career as a professor, researcher and leader. He returned to the university’s Homewood campus as associate dean of the Whiting School of Engineering in 1990.

As Vice Provost, Dr. Poehler is responsible for oversight of research-related offices, for university-wide research policies, for coordinating joint research initiatives among Johns Hopkins' nine academic and research divisions, and for matters related to research compliance. His responsibilities also include the oversight of the University Research Projects Administration Office, serving as the institutional official for the animal care and use program, managing the university security program, and the oversight of the Human Language Technology Development Center of Excellence. He serves as a university contact with the business community and works with government on local, regional and national economic development issues. He is responsible for monitoring and advising on federal policies, regulations, and actions that affect academic research. He assists the divisions of the university, as appropriate, in the initiation, formulation, and implementation of interdivisional research projects as well as the identification of funding sources. In addition, he serves on many university-wide committees which include serving as the chair of the Institutional Compliance Oversight Committee and the Committee on Research Information Practices.

Dr. Poehler serves on numerous boards including as Chair of the Board of the Emerging Technology Center, Chair of the Board of TEDCO, and Vice Chair of the Board of Jhpiego. He is also a member of the board of the East Baltimore Development Incubator, the Chesapeake Research Consortium, the Greater Baltimore Technology Council, and the Astrophysical Research Consortium.
