Project Director

Overview:
The Project Director will manage day-to-day operation of program activities for an anticipated DFID community mobilization maternal health award in Zambia. This includes providing technical, programmatic and financial oversight, developing relationships with key stakeholders and supervision of key technical and management staff. Director will guide strategic planning, design and implementation of the program and directly manage the donor relationship. Director will also ensure timely and cost-effective project implementation, reporting of results, managing project deliverables.
Responsibilities:
- Represent the project before all stakeholders and oversee all implementation activities
- Give leadership to annual work-planning
- Responsible for programmatic leadership to ensure strategic programmatic and financial integrity of the project
- Establish and maintain a productive relationship with key stakeholders, including the donor, government officials, NGOs and community groups for smooth implementation
- Assure smooth, efficient and collaboration with project team members to ensure necessary program planning, development, resource availability and management activities.
- Assure proper management of all subcontractors and their project activities
- Develop and oversee small grants to community based organizations to mobilize community uptake of emergency obstetric and neonatal care (EmONC) services
- Coordinate with the research component partner to ensure documentation of results from the pilot project sites and oversee plans for expansion
- Work collaboratively with project and headquarters staff to assure proper financial projections, reporting, spending and compliance with project terms and conditions
- Mentor, support, supervise project support staff aligning their efforts in concert with program goals
- Ensure quality program implementation consistent with Zambia national health guidelines
- Ensure that the project meets set targets
- Promote and support the dissemination of project information among the project team
- Ensure timely, accurate and appropriate reporting of program activities and results to the donor, including progress reports, and annual reports
- Ensure compliance with donor, Jhpiego and JHU operational policies and regulations
Qualifications and Requirements
- Advanced degree in public health or a related fields of maternal health and reproductive health
- 7+ years of mid to senior level experience designing, implementing or managing large, complex, community-level maternal health projects
- 2+ years’ in-country experience supporting implementation of Zambia state-level programs
- Demonstrated expertise working in a leadership capacity with international donors, senior government officials and policy makers
- Demonstrated experience managing the implementation of public health projects of over $1,000,000 US per year in developing countries, with emphasis on maternal health
- Demonstrated skills in the technical side of program implementation
- Proven track record managing a project team composed of several technical experts, program, finance, and administrative staff for at least two years
- Ability to building team capacity, delegating working teams, and developing communities of learning among host country partners and counterparts
- Excellent interpersonal, writing, and oral presentation skills
- Strong change management, results oriented and decision making skills
- Strong leadership and technical capacity to support service delivery, especially at the community level
- Ability to travel nationally
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience developing successful, replicable and sustainable projects in more than one state in Zambia
- Expertise in research to practice – identifying best practices and adapting them to program realities
- Solid publication record in areas relevant to the project
